Food in Nature: Science in the Kitchen

Start Date: September 03, 2008 End Date: September 26, 2008
Home School Workshop with Leslie Helliwell Wednesdays in September, 1 - 2:30PM (6 to 8 yr olds) Fridays in September, 1 - 2:30PM (9 to 12 yr olds) Students age 6-12 are invited to visit the ENC for weekly workshops in Nature. What do recipes, science, and history have in common? Naturalist Leslie Helliwell will share some of her favorite ingredients and experiments, and impart some of her arcane knowledge to students... like why certain pans work for some foods and not others, how yeast makes things poufy, what the processes of applying heat actually DO to cellular structure, why you don't really want to boil milk, how to collapse a soufflé (and why it happens), how to handle a knife so your fingers don't end up in the recipe, why asparagus makes your pee stink, why some people love Brussels sprouts and others hate them, and how food makes us sick. This class is NOT vegan/vegetarian, but vegans and vegetarians are welcome to join us! Every class will culminate in a little snack. Parents remain with students at all times (unless arrangements have been made with the instructor). Each session will be limited to 15 students. Cost: $30 per participating student.
